New research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) has shown that conference calls are more prevalent in business that ever before. In one technology provider, 79% of office-based workers now take part in conference calls, however 54% said that they are not as effective as they should be and 60% admit to carrying out other activities such as checking e-mails or browsing the web.
Over half said that they often struggled to hear people's contributions. Other common irritations included background noise (42%) and people talking for too long (30%), late joiners and heavy breathers.
